NAZCA LINES FLYOVER - UNESCO:

Code: PIS-02

Duration: 6¼ hours

Date: 11 Apr 2009

Time: Morning

Alien airfield? Giant calendar? Intricate pathways for footraces? Evidence of astronomical knowledge? Exactly why the geoglyphs were carved into the desert crust between Nazca and Palpa has yet to be proven. Perhaps your own theory will develop during today’s flyover.

Although they have become better understood in recent years, the Nazca Lines are still one of the world's most impressive ancient mysteries. Stretching for over 48km / 30mi along a flat, arid desert plateau, the Nazca Lines consist of a series of enormous and intricate drawings. The figures were carved into the desert crust about two millennia ago and the region's extremely dry climate has preserved them nearly intact. There are hundreds of individual figures, ranging in complexity from simple lines to stylized hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, fish, sharks, llamas and lizards. The largest figures are well over 200m / 656ft in length.

Departing from Pisco, drive about 90 minutes through the desert to the airport at Ica and board the Aerocondor STOL (short take-off-landing) plane for your flight over the mysterious Nazca markings. Marvel at the famous Nazca Lines, remarkable drawings cut into the stony desert resembling geometric figures and various forms such as a dog, monkey, spider, birds and a tree. Recently designated by UNESCO a World Heritage site, the lines show an understanding of sophisticated mathematics and surveying techniques. There will be a commentary in English, and excellent photo opportunities abound during the approximately 1:15hr flight, which 45 minutes are flown over the lines.

Afterward, visit the Regional Museum of Ica and the attractive oasis of Huacachina, which is highlighted by a palm-fringed lake amid amazing sand dunes. Your excursion continues with lunch at the Hotel Las Dunas, followed by the return drive to the ship.

NOTE: Flight involves a lot of banking and tight turns that may subject sensitive passengers to air sickness. As the weather is generally hot and dry, sunscreen and lightweight clothing are advised.
