TODOS SANTOS:

Code: LPZ-03

Duration: 5½ hours

Date: 17 May 2009

Time: Morning

Visit the cultural oasis town of Todos Santos, noted for its colonial architecture and thriving artist’s colony. Explore the interesting La Casa de Cultura museum, enjoy a private gallery visit and take advantage of some free time as well.

The drive from La Paz is approximately 90 minutes southwest, across the Baja Peninsula. A true oasis in the Baja desert, Todos Santos boasts pleasing views of the Pacific framed by swaying palms and verdant mango and avocado trees. Many of the handsome colonial-era buildings now house art galleries, small shops and restaurants.

Your first stop is in the town centre, at La Misión de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Todos Santos. Built by the Jesuits in 1724, the mission grew along with the expanding agricultural business in the region. Next, walk to the nearby La Casa de Cultura, filled with local artefacts and the works of local artists. Finally, a private visit to one of the galleries, hosted by the artist himself.

Todos Santos is also noted for its cuisine—enjoy some free time to have lunch on your own, or perhaps do some shopping before making the return drive to La Paz and The World.

NOTE: Casual, conservative attire is advised. Some shops may be closed on Sunday.
