The World

Salalah: 8 May 2008

Oman, second largest country in the Arabian Gulf, is a mixture of mountain ranges, desert sands and green wadis (riverbeds). The landscape is dotted by more than 500 forts and castles. Miles of undulating sand make up the Empty Quarter, back dropped by the impressive peaks of the Hajar Mountains. Ancient fjords, best explored by dhow, cut through the Musandam Peninsula and the Dhofar region.

Only Muslims may enter the ornate mosques and one should dress modestly when sightseeing. Look for special finds at the Souk in Salalah Town (about 16 km/10 mi from port) or take a stroll along the corniche. Watch some bull butting, take in a camel or horse race, go “wadi bashing,” or perhaps take in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, such as ancient Al Baleed or Ras al Hadd, nesting site of the endangered green turtle.
