The World

Santo Tomás de Castilla: 2 Mar 2009

'Guatemala' means 'land of many trees'. The port of Santo Tomás de Castilla provides access to rainforests, a manatee habitat, national parks, and archaeological sites such as UNESCO-recognized Quiriguá, containing some of the finest sculptures from ancient Mesoamerica. Copán, the 'Paris of the Mayan world' is known for its exceptional altars, temples and carved stelae, and only a short plane ride away. A covered market near the wharf gives visitors the opportunity to purchase souvenirs and local goods. Other nearby attractions include the city of Livingston, where Garifuna, Maya and Latino maintain their language, dialects and customs, creating a blend that is unique in all of Guatemala. Once a neglected coastline, Santo Tomás de Castilla now offers visitors an unadulterated Central America experience.
