Flamenco Island: 14 Mar 2009 to 15 Mar 2009
The Amador Causeway, just outside Panama City, is becoming a popular destination for yachties and other tourists visiting the region. Once home to a U.S. Army base when the Panama Canal was still under U.S. control, the causeway lies at the south-eastern tip of the canal. The causeway connects the three small islands of Noas, Perico and Flamenco with the mainland.
Flamenco Island, at the southern tip of the causeway, is the site of a new cruise ship port (scheduled for completion prior to our visit) and a popular shopping and dining complex. The island offers splendid views of the passing ship traffic, Panama City and the Bridge of the Americas. Horse-drawn carriages provide a pleasant way to traverse the length of the causeway.
