Saltspring, British Columbia: 27 Jun 2009 to 29 Jun 2009
Largest of British Columbia’s Gulf Islands, bucolic Saltspring Island is known equally for its range of outdoor activities and its dynamic artists’ colony. Island life centres on the three exotically named communities of Ganges, Fulford and Vesuvius. Do some kayaking around the gulf or tranquil Cusheon Lake, try your luck at fishing or perhaps hire a bike and cycle off around the island.
You won’t be able to miss the lively Saturday Market, just steps from the pier in Centennial Park. Stop by the Visitor Centre and pick up a copy of the Studio Tour map, a guide to resident artists and galleries. Known locally as “the sheep tour,” it pinpoints ceramists, painters, weavers, sculptors, glass blowers, carvers, photographers and the like. In addition to several restaurants serving fresh, local fare, the more upscale Hastings House Country Hotel (a member of Relais & Châteax) offers a more refined dining experience; reservations required.
