La Paz: 16 May 2009 to 17 May 2009
La Paz, not far from the southern end of the Baja California peninsula, is a mellower, quainter cousin to the livelier resort of Los Cabos. Visitors can expect to find isolated beaches not far from town, ancient cave paintings in distant canyons and a variety of aquatic pursuits from sea kayaking to snorkeling to sport fishing. Ecotourism is becoming more prevalent here in this fragile environment, with support from the Mexican government and international organizations as well.
John Steinbeck wrote extensively about the region in two books, The Pearl and his detailed, non-fiction account of a six-week expedition here in 1940, The Log from the Sea of Cortez. The waters of the Gulf of California, between Baja California and mainland Mexico, encompass some 900 islets and islands, nearly one-third of them now under the protection of UNESCO as World Heritage Bio-Reserves.
